McNeil gets improbable comeback to stun Bowie
Saturday, September 15, 2007

ROUND ROCK -- McNeil fans that left early in order to skip heavy traffic home missed more than a few brake lights and stop signs. They missed one of the best comebacks the state has seen so far this season.

Down 20 points in the second half, McNeil stormed back with a remarkable fourth quarter to stun Bowie 34-30 and remain unbeaten Friday night at Round Rock ISD Stadium.

Ryan Tyrone hauled in five passes for 71 yards and two touchdowns, but none was bigger than his 27-yard grab with 12 seconds to go. Tyrone's catch of Jake Fenske's pass capped a 79-yard touchdown drive that gave McNeil its first and only lead and ended an improbable comeback.

Fenske did everything in his power to keep the Mavericks (2-0) final drive alive. The McNeil quarterback completed 20 of 43 for 268 yards and three touchdowns, but saved his best work with the game on the line.

Fenske connected on five of his eight passes on the final 69-second drive and gave the Mavericks the win on a fourth-and-1 by evading a rush, rolling right and hitting Tyrone 10 yards from the end zone. Tyrone did the rest, breaking a tackle before calmly walking in for the score.

It was a brutal way for Bowie to taste defeat.

The Bulldogs (0-2) opened the game on Philander Moore's 102-yard kickoff return for a touchdown and built up a 27-14 fourth-quarter lead on the strength on Nick Goss' legs. Goss rushed for 96 yards on just 11 carries but, like Bowie, was kept out of the end zone when it counted most.
