2007 All Houston Team
Monday, December 24, 2007
It was another great high school football season in the Houston area, full of great players, great games, and even a pair of state championships as Katy and Lamar Consolidated both won it all. Now, Prep Ticket honors the best of the best in the Houston area, with our 2007 All Houston Team.
Player of the Year: Jacquizz Rodgers (Lamar Consolidated) Sr. - It was an amazing senior campaign for the state's all-time touchdown leader. An Oregon State commit, Rodgers rushed for 2,872 yards and 37 touchdowns and even contributed big plays on defense to lead the Mustangs to the 4A Division I championship.
Coach of the Year: Gary Joseph (Katy) - Some may say it's easy to give the award to the top team in the state, but you can't deny that the Tigers were ready to play every single week, and they dominated their opponents on both sides of the ball each and every time on their way to the championship.
Newcomer of the Year: Kolby Gray (Cy Falls) Jr. - In his first year as a starter, Gray was nothing short of outstanding. He completed 60 percent of his passes for 3,261 yards, 32 touchdowns, and just five interceptions. Considering he was one of ten new starters for the Cy Falls offense, he did a great job taking over and helping the Golden Eagles pick up right where they left off in 2006.
Game of the Year: Texas City 27, La Marque 24. On October 19, a pair of arch rivals battled back and forth before Mitch Russo's 32-yard field goal ended it in overtime.
Now, time to reveal our All Houston Team:
Quarterback - Andrew Luck (Stratford) Sr. - A great talent who led the Spartans to the state quarterfinals. The Stanford commit piled up 2,588 yards and 20 touchdowns through the air and another 650 yards and 13 scores on the ground.
Running back - Jacquizz Rodgers (Lamar Consolidated) Sr. - Of course our Player of the Year is on the first team. Rodgers meant as much to his team as any player in the state. A great leader and a great player.
Running back - Aundre Dean (Katy) Sr. - One of the state's most exciting players lived up to the hype this year, leading Katy to the state championship game while rushing for 2,500 yards and 26 touchdowns. Those are pretty good stats considering he not only missed a game with a broken hand, but he also sat out half of many of Katy's games this season when the Tigers had big leads.
Wide receiver - DeSean Hales (Klein Oak) Sr. - An electrifying talent no matter where you line him up: running back, wide receiver, or return man. Hales had over 1,600 yards of total offense this year and 15 touchdowns. The Houston Touchdown Club named the Texas commit their Offensive Player of the Year.
Wide receiver- Michael Smith (Westside) Sr. - A tall, physical receiver who had 56 catches for 824 yards and nine touchdowns.
Wide receiver - Darius Bolden (Cy Falls) Sr. - Had 58 catches and 1,133 yards for the explosive Golden Eagle offense.
Tight end - Eric Lair (Lamar) Sr. - An excellent blocker who also had 11 catches and five touchdowns for a team that relies heavily on the run.
Offensive line - J.B. Shugarts (Klein) Sr. - An Ohio State commit, Shugarts is a first-team all state player who did not allow a sack all year.
Offensive line - Pressley Goodson (Lamar Consolidated) Jr. - The season Jacquizz Rodgers had was amazing, but he had help, and Goodson can claim he had a big hand in the Mustangs' powerful rushing offense. He was first-team all-state this season, and he'll be back next year.
Offensive line - Chris Lathrop (Cy-Fair) Sr. - Whether it was Sam McGuffie or Wesley Cobb running the ball for the Bobcats, Lathrop was doing a great job paving the way. He'll be suiting up for Texas A&M next year.
Offensive line - Jack Fernandez, (Clements) Sr. - The 6'3, 285 pound senior was a big reason Chris Lenoir was able to rush for over 1,800 yards this season as the Rangers made it to the state quarterfinals.
Offensive line - Eric Ball (Katy) Sr. - A Rice commit, Ball was a leader on a strong offensive line that gave Bo Levi Mitchell plenty of time to throw and let Aundre Dean run wild this season to help Katy go 16-0.
Defensive line - Damion Square (Yates) Sr. - A huge, hard-hitting defensive tackle, Square is a verbal commit to Alabama. At 270 pounds, he made it nearly impossible for teams to run up the middle.
Defensive line - Leonard James (Marshall) Sr. - A lighting quick pass rusher who will likely be playing linebacker at the University of Houston.
Defensive line - Jimmy Burge (Stratford) Sr. - The Missouri commit did for the Stratford defense what Luck did for their offense. He made plays all season to help the Spartans reach the quarterfinals.
Defensive line - David King (Strake Jesuit) Sr. - The Oklahoma commit had 46 tackles and seven sacks to lead the Crusaders to the playoffs.
Linebacker - Sule Osagiede (Lamar Consolidated) Sr. - Osagiede seemed to be all over the field this season, as he was a big reason the Mustang defense shut down high powered offenses like New Braunfels and Copperas Cove on their way to the state championship.
Linebacker - Will Ebner (Friendswood) Sr. - A Missouri commit, Ebner is a fast, strong middle linebacker who has had a least 100 tackles in each of the last three seasons.
Linebacker - Alex Mirenda (Klein Oak) Sr. - Mirenda was a playmaker and a leader for the Panther defense, and a big reason the Panthers won 10 games this season.
Defensive back - Trent Hunter (Katy) Sr. - The winner of the Touchdown Club's Defensive Player of the Year, the Texas A&M commit did everything for the Tigers this season. He had over 120 tackles, four interceptions, and is also a solid contributor at running back and special teams.
Defensive back - Craig Loston (Aldine Eisenhower) Jr. - One of the nation's top prospects 2009, Loston was a sure tackler and great in pass defense in his junior year for the Eagles.
Defensive back - Broderick Brown (Westfield) Sr. - The Oklahoma State commit was a shutdown corner for one of the best defenses in the state.
Defensive back - Royce Hill (Cy Ridge) Sr. - Hill shutdown almost every receiver he faced this season thanks to his great speed and leaping ability.
Kicker - Randy Bullock (Klein) Sr. - One of the best kickers in the state was always reliable for Bearkats. He'll be at Texas A&M next year.
Punter - Mitch Russo (Texas City) Sr. - Russo did an excellent job pinning opponents deep, and was also great as a place kicker.
